I read reviews all the time for cloth diapering products. New, innovative products come out all the time, and I don’t want to spend money on them unless I know they’re worth it. Our current cloth diapering system works, so I don’t want to change it up unnecessarily.
One of my recent purchases was a pair of Woollybottoms Footies. These are fairly unique, as most wool longies (pants) don’t have feet attached. But Gah has recently stopped using a sleep sack, so I want him to stay as covered as possible. Socks and longies still have a little gap along the ankle.
For $33, I got a lovely pair of tan and blue chickadee Woollybottoms footies from Abby’s Lane. While Abby’s Lane stocked several different colors, there weren’t many available in Medium or Large. Especially in “boy colors.” $33 is a fairly average price for longies. You’ve got your sustainablebabyish longies that go for $65, and your handknit ones that can go for around $20, so $33 is in the middle.
They arrived the same day I received a pair of sustainablebabyish wool interlock karate pants (discontinued). Those babies are THICK! So of course the Woollybottoms, in comparison, seemed a little… flimsy. But, boy, did they smell good. They came pre-lanolized (sweet!) in the signature Woollybottoms Love Spell scent. Pre-lanolization means I got to try them that night, instead of a few days later after lanolization + drying time.
Once I got them on Gah, I was impressed! They certainly didn’t seem flimsy! They were soft, well-made, and a nice mid-weight wool. Unfortunately the larges seemed a little big on Gah. He is a little chunk, with a big waist but short legs, so the feet were dragging on these. I deliberately bought on the larger size, since I hoped they would fit throughout the winter. Underneath his footies, Gah wore a Kissaluvs hemp fitted in M/L, with an extra Hemp Babies doubler for good measure. The Woollybottoms had no problem covering his round booty.
So then morning came, after Gah woke up for 2 bottles of water. And… wow! The bed stayed dry. The footies felt damp, and the diaper was soaked, but they did their job. I was a little surprised that the waist of the woolies stayed in place, since it was a little loose. The feet, however, did not stay on. But since he was just rolling around in bed and not walking, I didn’t mind.
I am so impressed that I think I am going to buy another pair, this time in medium. They are stretchy enough that I think the medium will make a big difference. The feet should stay in place, and the inseam won’t be too long for once he starts walking. I think the footies are a great idea for babies that won’t stay covered overnight. I’m surprised more companies/knitters don’t make these!
